At Souda Bay there is a war cemetery. It is kept beautifully and is very peaceful.
When my sister was here on holiday, we took them to see it. Walking through the headstones is a very moving experience. Many were unknown, many were very young, around 19 yrs. These men gave their lives fighting for freedom. To read more about Souda Bay War Cemetery go here.
It is not unusual to see people wiping away tears, I had them too.
There was a service here on Remembrance day. It was not good weather then for it started to rain just as the service was starting. Still they were remembered.

I like the way they have left dirt to plant plants around the grave stones. Much nicer than fake flowers. Lovely really. I am sure it was deeply moving too.
What a lovely place. Yes, it is important to remember those who fought for freedom. Lovely images.
You can read casualty numbers in the newspaper but a cemetary filled with headstones makes it all so much more real.
