Hey ho hey ho

SV202559

Today I started weeding our overgrown garden. I know this might sound funny, but we have to go up our outside steps then onto the roof of the stable to get to this piece of garden. The wall at the back is actually the road. Yes the house is lower than the garden as it is built on the side of a mountain and the back road is higher again. So far I have got 5 big bin bags full of weeds.

See I have managed to get to the wall/road. The lumps of wood we collected last year. It should be seasoned enough for our fire this winter.

At the right side of the picture you can see a creamy ball shaped object, this is a seed head of the artichoke plant there and right on the edge of the picture is an artichoke head. Might get to eat some this year. I have never tried them and I don't even know how to cook them.

Caught this butterfly warming himself in the afternoon sun.

These snails are what we collected last year from the garden. A Greek friend of ours took them to eat. Think I will just collect them and see if anybody wants them. I just don't fancy them. My hubby reckons they taste like chicken only more chewy.

Once the garden is cleared I am hoping to grow squash and courgettes through black plastic and anything else that will grow in such stony ground.

Any offers on digging it? I have a spare spade, and I make a good cup of tea. Ha ha.

My goodness that WAS a lot of snails and they look just like mine. I thought the ediable ones were of a special kind. Not the ordinary garden variety. Wrong?
Wow. Maybe we could make big bucks selling them. LOL
Happy Gardening.

Yes Lynn, they are the same kind of snails that we had in our garden in England. They go out picking them here after its been raining. We have been down to the cafenion tonight and we were given a plate full in our mezes. Afraid to say that I passed on them. One day I might have a taste when I pluck up the courage.

they do not taste like chicken. they have their own distinct flavor and are very chewy. i do enjoy garden posts as i am without one this year for the first time in 20 years.

Love to hear all about the gardening going on at the moment on Crete. Here in British Columbia, Canada, I am also planting my veggie garden, a bit late this year as we had an unusually cold beginning to Spring. We will be visiting Latsida in October 2009 for about 6 weeks , long enough to paint walls etc after being away for a year, and reacquaint ourselves with our neighbours and our surroundings. We bought our house 2 years ago and spent 4 weeks there last fall. Until my husband retires in 2011 I have to content myself with keeping in touch via blogs and fora to hear what is happening in the area. Best wishes Vivien.

How nice that you have garden plot so close to your home. I can't wait to see how it looks later this summer.
